It was built in 1881 by the Harvey brothers, who came from a \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003edynastic Whisky\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e family. The brothers had wanted to create a distillery that was the \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003every antithesis\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e of an Islay farm distillery. They built a cathedral-like, \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003estate-of-the-art\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e Victorian still house, where they used 6m tall stills, which was unheard of at that time, and way ahead of its time.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nToday, the distillery remains pretty much the same as it did over 100 years ago. Their belief is, as the French culinary saying goes, \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e\"it is in the oldest pots that the best soup is made\"\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e. Slow fermentation, slow distillation, in very traditional, wooden vats and huge washes made from towering Douglas Fir.\u003cbr\u003e\r\n\u003cbr\u003e\r\nHowever, they don't just make Whisky, they also \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eproduce Gin\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e. For the \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eBotanist Islay Dry Gin\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e the craftsmen at Bruichladdich use \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e9 classic Gin\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e aromatics and a whopping \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e22 additional local botanicals\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, which are hand-picked from the windswept hills, peat bogs, and Atlantic shores of the Hebridean island of Islay. This Islay specialty is distilled \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003e4 times slower\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e than the average Gin, in Bruichladdich's \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eUgly Betty\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e, one of the few remaining \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003eLomond Stills\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e in existence.
